AQUA
FISH FARM
About Us
Aqua Fish
Farms is located in the southern tip-of-Texas by the Rio
Grande River on 104 acres of land. Our main source of water
is from the Rio Grande River, which is delivered to the farm
through an irrigation canal. The farm also has additional
water source from wells with excellent water quality and
warm temperature which is utilized for overwintering of
brooders from non-cold tolerant species. Our farm is
comprised of several earth ponds averaging 5-6 acres each,
several earthen raceways for brood fish, indoor raceways and
tanks for overwintering tilapia brooders, an 8,000 square
ft, hatchery with a modern biological filtration system,
research laboratory and an oxygen generator room.
Our emphasis
over the past two years has been research, development and
construction of unique hatchery facilities to produce high
quality fingerlings of various species for the fish farming
industry for their final growth and sale to the food fish
market.
Our Tilapia
Brooders have been obtained from prestigious research
centers around the world and selected to achieve our goal to
produce Tilapia fingerlings without color contamination,
with high performance growth and food conversion efficiency,
and optimum tolerance to salinity, cold weather, low
dissolved oxygen and handling tolerance.
Recent
consultation with Dr. Rex Dunham, Alumni Professor of the
Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures at Auburn
University, Alabama, and expert on hybrid catfish
reproduction, has enabled our farm to initiate production of
the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, female X
blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus, male. The hybrid is
the best catfish for pond culture, far surpassing the
performance of both channel catfish and blue catfish.
Production of this catfish hybrid was successfully obtained
in 2003, and production is projected to be over Five Million
Fingerlings for 2004.
Aqua Fish
Farms is the first fish hatchery and farm to successfully
produce catfish hybrids in commercial quantities in Texas
and the expectation of incrementally increasing the
production of the hybrid catfish is our main goal.
Our Channel
and Blue Catfish Brooders are pure Rio Grande Strains and
they have been meticulously selected to obtain top quality
fingerlings. These brooder stocks are maintained in special
ponds for their natural reproduction to maintain a large
number of catfish for the selection of the new generation of
brooder stock.
Our business
is focused mainly on the production of high quality
fingerlings and to make them available to the fish farming
industry for their final growth to food fish size.
Scientific research, both by our biology staff and in
collaboration with Universities and outside experts are
essential for the ongoing and future success of Aqua Fish
Farms benefiting our customers with access to improved
fingerlings from the most recent technological advances.
